1983 MILITARY COUP IN NIGERIA WAS TO STOP IGBO PRESIDENCY – EZEIFE

Former Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife in an exclusive interview with Ogene Anambra disclosed that the 1983 military coup which ousted Alhaji Shehu Shagari from office was solely to prevent an Igbo man from becoming president.
He said that the party (National Party of Nigeria, NPN) had already resolved that Dr. Alex Ekwueme, the then Vice-President will be given automatic presidential ticket, an arrangement which didn’t go down well with the political elites in the North prompting the Northern military officers to stage a coup against the Shehu Shagari administration which was already doing a second term in office.
That 1983 coup saw the emergence of Nigeria's current president, Muhammadu Buhari  as the Head of State.
